Explore the Wonders of the Santa Barbara Channel

Perched above the Pacific Ocean on historic Stearns Wharf, the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History Sea Center offers visitors a unique opportunity to discover the incredible marine life of the Santa Barbara Channel. More than a traditional aquarium, the Sea Center is an interactive marine science museum where guests of all ages can touch sea creatures, conduct ocean experiments, observe fascinating marine animals, and learn about one of the richest coastal ecosystems in the world.

Located approximately halfway down Stearns Wharf, the Sea Center combines breathtaking waterfront views with hands-on exhibits that make learning about ocean life both educational and fun.

A Museum on the Ocean

The Sea Center opened on Stearns Wharf in 1986 as the waterfront campus of the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History, whose main museum in Mission Canyon has inspired visitors since 1916. The Sea Center was created specifically to educate the public about the biodiversity and ecological importance of the Santa Barbara Channel, one of the most biologically productive marine environments in the world.

Its location directly above the ocean allows visitors to experience marine science in a setting unlike almost any other museum.

Hands-On Learning

One of the Sea Center’s greatest attractions is its emphasis on interactive exhibits.

Visitors can:

  • Touch sea stars and sea anemones
  • Observe swell sharks and rays
  • Meet the resident California two-spot octopus
  • Watch mesmerizing moon jellies
  • Discover colorful marine invertebrates
  • Learn about kelp forests and rocky reefs

Unlike many aquariums where exhibits are viewed only through glass, the Sea Center encourages guests to interact with marine life while learning from knowledgeable staff and volunteers.

The Wet Deck

One of the Sea Center’s signature experiences is the Wet Deck.

Here, visitors become marine scientists by using real oceanographic tools to investigate the waters surrounding Stearns Wharf.

Activities may include:

  • Collecting seawater samples
  • Measuring ocean conditions
  • Examining plankton
  • Observing marine organisms beneath the wharf
  • Learning how scientists study the Santa Barbara Channel

Because the ocean changes daily, every visit offers something new to discover.

Marine Mammals of the Channel

The Sea Center features impressive displays highlighting the incredible marine mammals that call the Santa Barbara Channel home.

One of the museum’s most recognizable exhibits is the life-sized model of a gray whale mother and calf, helping visitors appreciate the enormous scale of these magnificent animals.

Exhibits also explore:

  • Blue whales
  • Humpback whales
  • Gray whales
  • Dolphins
  • Sea lions
  • Harbor seals
  • Migration routes
  • Marine conservation

The Santa Barbara Channel is internationally recognized as one of the world’s premier whale-watching destinations, making these exhibits especially meaningful for visitors planning ocean excursions.

Conservation in Action

The Sea Center is more than a museumβ€”it actively participates in marine conservation.

Among its most important programs is its partnership in the White Abalone Restoration Consortium, helping restore one of California’s most endangered marine species.

The museum also promotes:

  • Ocean conservation
  • Marine wildlife protection
  • Sustainable coastal ecosystems
  • Scientific research
  • Environmental education

Visitors leave with a greater understanding of how healthy oceans benefit both wildlife and people.

Perfect for Families

The Sea Center is one of Santa Barbara’s most popular family attractions.

Children especially enjoy:

  • Touch tanks
  • Interactive exhibits
  • Sharks
  • Octopus displays
  • Ocean experiments
  • Hands-on learning
  • Marine animal encounters

Parents appreciate that the museum combines education with fun while offering spectacular ocean views from every level.

A Beautiful Location

Few museums can match the Sea Center’s setting.

Located directly above the Pacific Ocean on Stearns Wharf, visitors enjoy panoramic views of:

  • Santa Barbara Harbor
  • East Beach
  • West Beach
  • The Santa Ynez Mountains
  • The Pacific Ocean
  • The Channel Islands (on clear days)

Many visitors combine their Sea Center visit with lunch on the Wharf, shopping, whale watching, or a walk along Cabrillo Boulevard.
